It’s next to sacrilegious to forget one’s roots in sports. The faculty and teams that mentored and nurtured talents into superstars are often prominent in the victories of the same men and women whom they first scouted out.

In the modern context, a prodigal return is aptly attributed to this affection to one’s roots, with players returning or vowing to return to those clubs that made them who they are.

However, what happens when this return has already been accomplished, at a young age, and now a stay at your former ground of glory is appearing doubtful? A similar plight afflicts Paul Pogba, and the French midfielder has opened up.

Pogba has stated (via RMC): “Coming back to Manchester United was like coming home. This has always been my home and it forever will be”

Rapt and tactful words from the 25-year-old, whose initial sale by United to Juventus was viewed as a mistake. Sure enough, when he starred and rose to world-class acclaim with the Italian giants, a record was broken to ensure that he was brought back to the Theatre of Dreams.

Of course, things have now gone quite sour. Pogba and Jose Mourinho seem to be having their differences, and the clash of egos has culminated in the midfielder recently being stripped of his vice-captaincy.

Then again, the move has also been viewed by pundits as a masterstroke on part of Mourinho, who wishes to rein in the player’s ego.

However, the Portuguese gaffer may be playing with fire here, as the higher-ups at Old Trafford have time and again stressed that Pogba is a valuable asset, and one that they won’t sell, as the Mancunian giants look eager to form their own Messi figure.

In view of Pogba’s claim that United is his home and the club’s insistence at backing him, what does this mean for the future of Mourinho with the Red Devils?
