Former Coach Explains Why Depay Flopped At Manchester United

Of all the players to have donned the no.7 jersey at Manchester United after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, it certainly appeared that in Memphis Depay, the club had found a hopeful candidate to run the idea of a youth talent taking the reins forward.

However, that was not to be, and the Dutch international spent a brief two years at Old Trafford before being sold to Lyon.

In Ligue 1, Depay has thrived plenty, and his recent outing with the Dutch national team has had United fans puzzled over his hasty sale. Many of them were aware of the buy-back clause intact in his contract, and hope may exist of him becoming a Red Devil yet again.

However, that doesn’t solve the underlying issue of what had initially gone wrong, and a former coach of the talent has an idea.

Speaking to Voetbalprimeur, former Dutch U21s coach Cor Pot opines the following about Depay’s initial move to United from PSV:

“I found Memphis especially a very positive boy. You already saw that it was a very great talent, maybe he went to Manchester United a bit too early, and that was all too fast. He was just a basic player in Eindhoven, Lyon was a good step for Memphis. It’s fantastic now.”

Pot adds: “He keeps on developing himself – not only as a player, but also as a person – Memphis gets a bit calmer, does not do any crazy things anymore, but at the time he was a bit shy. Of course, you had that fuss with that extravagant behaviour. That seems a bit over now, I think he’s doing fine.”

The player’s lifestyle choices, in particular, were the subject of much criticism during his United days, but this Depay seems like a changed talent. Will Mourinho be inclined to purchase him back?
