UEFA Explain The VAR Decision That Led To Manchester United’s Winner vs PSG

Paris Saint-Germain were once again knocked out of the Champions League from the Round of 16 stage, thanks to a dramatic comeback by Manchester United.
After suffering a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford, the Red Devils performed admirably during the return leg in Paris, and a 3-1 win on the night sent the English giants through to the quarterfinals on away goals.
Marcus Rashford was the player to bag the winning goal in the final moments of the game, as he calmly converted the crucial penalty which was awarded thanks to the Video Assistant Referee.
The VAR decision was heavily questioned after the game, with PSG manager Thomas Tuchel as well as star talisman Neymar Jr expressing their displeasure over the call which they deemed to be incorrect.

Now, UEFA have released a statement on their official website, explaining the decision that was made after United full-back Diogo Dalot’s shot was hit PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe’s arm.
The statement read: “The VAR, after checking various different angles available to him, recommended to the referee an on-field review following the penalty area incident.
“Given that the referee did not recognise the incident clearly during live play (referred to as serious missed incident in the VAR protocol) an on-field review was conducted.

“Following the on-field review, the referee confirmed that the distance that the ball travelled was not short and the impact could therefore not be unexpected.
“The defender’s arm was not close to the body, which made the defender’s body bigger thus resulting in the ball being stopped from travelling in the direction of the goal. The referee, therefore, awarded a penalty kick.
“All the above-mentioned decisions were made in full compliance with the VAR protocol.”
