Why Solskjaer Won’t Strengthen United’s Defence This Summer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might veto a move for a centre-back to bring in a right winger.
Following a string of impressive performances at the helm of Manchester United, the interim boss appears set to be named the permanent manager of the Red Devils.
In fact, multiple sources suggest that the Norwegian tactician has already begun planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, as he intends to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
The current team has two areas that have needed immediate strengthening right from Jose Mourinho’s time at the club, viz. central defence and the right wing.

The Mancunian giants have been linked with a host of centre-backs for the past two years, and the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Milan Skriniar, amongst others, continue to get linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
However, United might have to cough up a humongous fee, and even break the transfer record for a defender by crossing the £75m mark to sign most of these targets. But as per The Sun, Solskjaer would rather focus on spending such big bucks on an attacking reinforcement.

The report indicates that Ole is prepared to give Manchester United‘s current crop of centre-backs ample chances to prove themselves in the heart of his side’s defence.
Further, the 45-year-old intends to use a majority of his budget on signing a right winger, with Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho believed to be a top target.
Other wide-men such as Juve’s Douglas Costa and Inter Milan ace Ivan Perisic remain on the Reds’ wishlist, and the 20-time English champions are likely to pursue one of these attackers instead of paying heed to the team’s needs at the back.
