Manchester United To Hand Former Player A Massive Role?

Manchester United’s need for a transition period is becoming more and more evident as each week passes by. To add to their woe of a 4-0 defeat against Everton, the club lost to bitter rivals Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in a recent press-conference, emphatically stated that he couldn’t wait for the pre-season period to begin. He is eager for success at the club, and the pre-season will allow him to rebuild and recruit in peace.
Now, he could have familiar faces by his side at the time. The Telegraph has reported that United is considering appointing Darren Fletcher for a role in the club’s hierarchy. The former Red Devil is playing out the final days of his contract at Stoke City.
This is believed to be a reformed approach from the club, as they wish the next era of United’s management to be preferably handled by former players themselves.

In particular, the talents that were present during Sir Alex Ferguson’s glory days and are familiar with the philosophy and identity of the side are being looked out for.
Fletcher, 35, certainly fits the bill, and the report adds that he could assist Mike Phelan, who is touted to be elevated to technical director of the club soon. In addition to this prospect, murmurs have also been suggesting that Fletcher could manage the Scottish national side down the line.

It certainly appears that the higher-ups at the club are attempting to make amends for their mistakes over the past 5 or 6 years.
After the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, the club certainly looked to have lost its path and identity, relying on spending big and focussing more on commercial success and brand identity rather than on-field brilliance.
The arrival of Solskjaer and his success, when paired with Phelan, seems to suggest that the summer overhaul won’t just be in the club’s playing roster.
