One of the major descriptive indicators for young maestros in the game is when they are compared with the legends of the old days. There is a strong tendency for agents and scouts to use this tactic extensively, which may over-hype certain players.

In most cases, it is the playing styles of these individuals that merit such comparison, with the previous era’s iconic becoming the next season’s commonplace.

Now, one promising youngster has received an assessment and comparison that could go a long way.

Tuttosport has interviewed Italian agent Giovanni Branchini and over the course of the interaction, many players and their potentials were discussed.

However, the standout assessment from the agent appeared to be his description of Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella.

Speaking about the 22-year-old, Branchini quipped: “Extraordinary player. He reminds me of Scholes. And I think he can go to Manchester United.”

This could put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and company on some notice. The sort of midfield brilliance that Scholes brought to the pitch was rarely matched and remains one of the Premier League’s finest.

As of such, they have been hunting for his replacement for many years now and the toothless nature of their midfield is evident in the bigger games against creative competition.

In addition, the club’s existing midfield maestros have their future in great doubt. Ander Herrera is PSG-bound in the summer, which eliminates a chunk of ready intent and experience from their roster. Paul Pogba, their most valued midfield asset, isn’t too happy at Old Trafford at the moment. The likely absence of Champions League football for next season may just tip him towards an exit.

The Italian is a central midfielder but is also versatile and can be deployed in the attacking front when needed as well. However, he is penned to the Serie A side until 2022.
