What Solskjaer Said About Mason Greenwood After His First Premier League Start
Manchester United fans will be eager to forget the season just passed by. Their side thoroughly disappointed them, unable to even finish off the season on a positive note as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to relegated Cardiff City at Old Trafford.
Ever since the historic comeback victory against PSG in Paris, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and company have seen a downward spiral in terms of performances.
Sunday’s display was yet another pathetic one. However, both the supporters and manager can agree on one thing- the sheer brilliance that 17-year-old Mason Greenwood showed on his first full start with the senior team.
Speaking after the game, Solskjaer assessed the teenager’s performance, stating: “Mason Greenwood was brilliant, he was our best player by a mile and that says a lot about the kid. He came into the team with a lack of confidence and you can see that has taken a toll. Not surprised by his performance, we know he is capable of that.”

He goes on to add: “Today was not the problem, you can have all the possession and chances you want but we concede easy goals and not score at the other. That is not where our challenge lies, we have a long and hard way to be where we want to be.”
A summer overhaul seems imminent at Old Trafford with a lot of deadwood to clear out. The trickier scenario will be dealing with some of the side’s bigger names like Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, and Alexis Sanchez who have been utterly poor in the final weeks of the season and many critics have rendered them to be an unnecessary drag on United’s wages.
Solskjaer was expected to give the youth academy graduates numerous opportunities but the Cardiff game was the only one where he trusted any of them with a full start. Fans will be hoping that that changes next season, along with a lot of other things.
