Manchester United are showing great intent this transfer window. The club requires at least four arrivals and as many departures in order to make a tangible difference in their performance for next season.

Further, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly specified that he’d like the club to have most of its business done by July 1 so as to have the maximum possible time to train with his roster in the pre-season tour.

Amongst the pressing needs at the club is that of a capable centre-back. While recent reports are suggesting that the Red Devils have pursued some low-profile names, including those from the Championship, they’d still prefer a world-class arrival.

Now, they have allegedly employed a special measure to attain de Ligt from Ajax.

Two separate sources have claimed that United are trying to use former goalkeeper and current Ajax CEO Edwin Van Der Sar to convince the 19-year-old centre-back to move to Old Trafford.

While journalist Miguel Rico carried the above claim, Marca staff-writer Chris Winterburn has tweeted an added dimension to the saga. He too gave credibility to the Van Der Sar angle, with the close relationship that the Dutchman has with the youngster expected to sway him into believing that United is a better destination.

However, the same source also adds that Barcelona are more likely to get the deal done and that the Mancunian side is just exploring whether they can try and hijack the deal in this manner. He likened the saga to the one that transpired between PSG and Barca for Frenkie De Jong.

It was earlier claimed that de Ligt has major concerns with shifting to Old Trafford. He fears that the English team are no longer the giants they used to be and that they wouldn’t aid him in his ambition to become the best defender in Europe.
