When Manchester United confirmed that Daniel James was their inaugural signing of the summer, many were eager to point out the fact that the Welsh winger actually played for a Championship club.

Despite the player’s other skillsets, this fact was repeatedly held against the Red Devils. There seemed to be an indication that the Premier League giants were no longer able to attract players from the top leagues anymore.

It is evident that not having Champions League football to offer is severely hampering the club’s chances.

Despite that, they are still adamant on signing a top player.

According to Sport, United have tried to sign Ivan Rakitic from Barcelona. Specifically, the report claims that the English giants have asked Barca what the cost for the 31-year-old Croatian would be.

The interest from Old Trafford, apart from the fact that they are in the market for an able central-midfielder, also stems from the fact that Rakitic may be available. It is believed that the Catalan side will not offer a fresh contract to the midfielder and that seems to have piqued United’s interest.

This isn’t an entirely fresh approach from the Red Devils, as the club was rumored to be in the market earlier as well, with Jose Mourinho also believed to be interested in securing his services.

The report further adds that Rakitic is happy at Barcelona, despite the alleged non-deal on his contract. Barca appear to have pegged a £50 million pricetag on the midfielder and it is also claimed that United have to significantly improve on their offer in order to acquire the player.

Rakitic is understood to have a shaky future at Camp Nou, one where he may not enjoy the same level of playing time as he always have. At Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and company are desperate for an experienced and world-class presence in their midfield.
