Manchester United have identified the defender they will pursue if they fail to sign Harry Maguire.

The Leicester City centre-back is currently a prime transfer target for both Manchester City and Manchester United, with a battle for his services seemingly imminent this summer.

According to Sky Sports, both the Mancunian clubs are set to kickstart their pursuit of the England international now that the UEFA Nations League has reached its conclusion.

The Foxes currently value the 26-year-old around £80 million, meaning any interested party will have to break the transfer record for a defender to secure Maguire’s services.

While the Cityzens are said to be reluctant to cough up that amount, they are still the favourites to seal this deal, because they are capable of offering Maguire Champions League football and a better shot at winning silverware.

If the Red Devils do end up losing Maguire to the Etihad outfit, they have a backup plan ready, in the form of Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Napoli superstar has been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar for quite some time, and United will immediately begin pursuing the Senegalese international if they fail to sign Maguire.

Reports from Italy suggest that the Serie A club will not part ways with Koulibaly unless they receive an offer in the region of £89 million – an amount that surpasses the price tag set on Maguire.
