Contract extension talks are proving to be just as tedious as transfer pursuits in the modern era.

Most players appear to be waking up to the fact that they can earn much more than what their clubs are presently paying them and often use the fact that other clubs may desire their services at a bigger price as leverage to broker the best possible extension to their stays.

Manchester United has been a club that has to ponder a lot about their contract extensions. A host of important players in their roster are about to enter their final year or two and as of such have already begun negotiating their extensions.

Now, United may have secured the temporary future of one of their talents.

As per the Mirror, Manchester United and Juan Mata are ‘90 percent certain’ to reach an agreement in the coming days. The player’s representatives have been negotiating with the club for a long time now and it was initially expected that the Spaniard would depart the club this summer. Mata has two weeks left on his present deal at Old Trafford.

United are understood to have refused the attacking midfielder’s demand for a pay-hike and clubs like Barcelona appeared to have tempted him to an exit.

Now, the report claims that a one-year extension is agreed to by all parties, extending the Spaniard’s stay at the club. Mata has been a constant presence in United’s endeavors over the years, surviving the reigns of multiple managers and emerging as one of the leading midfielders in the Premier League.

However, the player hasn’t always been deployed in his preferred position, nor has he been able to make his way up the pecking order. The demanded pay-rise may have been an attempt on his part to establish a clear squad position and it is unclear where this alleged year-long extension leaves him on the selection ladder.
