Manchester United have suddenly emerged as the club that has to worry about assigning new contracts to its existing talents just as much as the players they are touted to be signing this summer.

While the sagas of Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba seem destined to end in exits from Old Trafford, there is still a chance that fresh deals will be assigned to some players. Marcus Rashford and Pogba are recently been touted to secure huge new contracts that will see a massive hike in their weekly wages.

However, much of that is still speculation at this point. The contract that United have secured, however, hasn’t left supporters all too happy.

According to Sport, United have given Juan Mata a fresh three-year extension to his stay at Old Trafford.

The report claims that the Spaniard will retire with the Mancunian outfit and then continue to be with the club in other positions. This means that Mata will be plying his trade at Old Trafford until 2021 by when he’ll be around 34 years old.

While it is nice that a player of his experience will be sticking around and that he could potentially play a further role at the side, the decision to award him a three-year deal hasn’t gone well with all the fans.

Many took to Twitter to exclaim their disbelief at the duration of his new deal.

While Mata wasn’t strictly considered as part of the deadwood that the fans have been demanding be cleared out this transfer window, the fact that he is aging and hasn’t been at his best as of late hasn’t evaded them either.

As of such, at best it was thought that year-long extension would suffice in the event Barcelona don’t pry him away and he doesn’t get the pay hike he has been allegedly demanding.

However, this decision is now being slammed as yet another poor one from the club.
