Manchester United were believed to have had the Bruno Fernandes deal in the bag weeks ago.

The Red Devils were strong initial contenders for his signature and have stood through multiple interests. Initially, it was the Man City factor that was believed to be in contention but the Sky Blues are believed to have walked away from the deal since.

Now, it is the finances of the matter that may be plaguing United with the added threat of other Premier League giants allegedly in the fray.

It is obvious that past reports had overestimated the level of progress that the Old Trafford outfit have made with an official bid yet to have been launched. Certain clauses in the player’s deal at Sporting may also be the reason for the same.

Now, United are looking at alternate options in the event a deal for Fernandes can’t be locked down.

As per multiple reports in Italy, United are seriously looking to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio. He was a target that the Red Devils were closely linked with but the price was once again an issue.

However, now the sources are indicating that Lazio wish to offload the 24-year-old for whatever fee they can get as they fear that his value will drop greatly.

Even here the exact sum is in contention. Initial claims had suggested a £70 million valuation from the Serie A side, with United believed to start negotiating from £64 million or so.

However, the Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sports Witness) suggest that Lazio’s president now wants upwards of £100 million for the Serb. From the get-go, this price seems like one that United won’t be willing to meet as the Fernandes saga can be solved for a fee well below this range.

However, it is certain that the details are still vague and often conflicting in this saga and it will be intriguing to see how it develops in the days to come.
