Fred continues to be linked with a summer transfer to AS Roma.

Speculation linking the midfielder with a transfer to Rome began emerging immediately after his former Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca took charge of the Serie A club.

Now, two Italian news outlets have brought the story back up, but each source provides a different update.

Firstly, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma continue to monitor Fred’s situation at Manchester United. However, no news has been provided regarding a potential transfer fee or wages.

On the other hand, Corriere dello Sport suggest that the Red Devils will only allow the Brazilian international to join Roma on a temporary loan basis.

Moreover, the only scenario wherein this move will successfully work out is if the Mancunian giants agree to pay a large chunk of the midfielder’s €5m/year wages.

Considering the shortage of central midfielders in the current Manchester United roster, however, it seems extremely unlikely for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to let go of Fred.

In fact, this coming season could end up providing a great opportunity for the 26-year-old to establish himself as a guaranteed first-team starter at Old Trafford.
