Manchester United fans were ecstatic to see Anthony Martial handed the no.9 shirt yet again.

Further, when the young Frenchman netted a goal against Chelsea, the roar of the Old Trafford crowd seemed to agree with the decision that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer made by playing Martial centrally once more.

In the past, Louis Van Gaal’s decision to redeploy the youngster as a winger was furthered by Jose Mourinho and although the former Monaco star did show spectacular cut-in prowess from the left-wing, there was significant competition for the spot and not much scope for scoring goals.

After seeing Romelu Lukaku’s rather immobile presence at the striker’s spot, it is evident that supporters of United are eager for the dynamic resurgence of Martial.

Now, the striker himself has revealed precisely what Solskjaer requires of him in the new (old) role (via the United App): “Now that I’ve taken the number nine shirt back once again, all he (Solskjaer) has said to me is that I have a lot of responsibility and that I have to score goals, so that’s what I’m trying to do. We work on that a lot in training and I think it’s improving all the time.”

He goes on to add: “Since I was a young kid, I‘ve always played as a striker but, then again, I’m fine with playing more out wide as it’s a position that I enjoy playing. It’s a real pleasure to find myself back in that more central role so I hope I can really help the team from there and go on to score plenty of goals.”

Fans will certainly agree with Solskjaer’s target for Martial. Despite possessing multiple players who are well and truly capable of finding the back of the net, the Old Trafford outfit has sorely lacked the reliability of a prolific individual goalscorer.

Will Martial break the 20-goal glass-ceiling that Robin Van Persie last secured for the club?
