To be critical is part and parcel of a fan’s experience in watching the players and the game they admire.

However, as of recent, a few individuals who clearly don’t subscribe to the notions of gentlemanliness and fair play that is at the heart of football, have taken their criticism to pathetic heights.

Instances of racism have always polluted the dialogue surrounding football but in the past days, things have gotten quite serious.

In England, when the likes of Tammy Abraham and Paul Pogba missed penalties, the aftermath resulted in racist comments being hurled at them on social media.

These were heavily condemned by the larger football community and Twitter themselves expressed a desire to take strong action to avoid such instances in the future.

Now, Paul Pogba has officially addressed the situation by tweeting the following: “My ancestors and my parents suffered for my generation to be free today, to work, to take the bus, to play football. Racist insults are ignorance and can only make me stronger and motivate me to fight for the next generation.”

These are powerful words from the Frenchman and an apt response to the hate-speech.

Pogba and the other players who were the victims of such abuse were shown great amounts of support in the aftermath of the incidents. Old Trafford was filled with posters and banner decrying the acts of racism during Manchester United’s loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

However, in the aftermath of the same encounter, it was Marcus Rashford who was the target of racial abuse after the English striker failed to convert a penalty in the second-half.

It is vital that these instances must be condemned for the acts of abuse that they truly are and shouldn’t color the work and spirit of the larger football community across the globe.
