Player Ratings: Southampton 1-1 Manchester United

Manchester United continued their poor form as they drew 1-1 against a 10-man Southampton.

The Red Devils opened the scoring via Daniel James in the first-half, only to have a clever spell from the Saints in the second-half end with Vestergaard’s heading in a goal past David De Gea.

Even though Kevin Danso was sent off by virtue of two yellow cards, United were unable to score the winner and continued their dismal away run.

Here’s how the Red Devils fared during the trip.

David De Gea – 6.0

Poor showing from the Spaniard despite making some picturesque clearances. Ought to have caught the ball preceding the goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7.9

Brilliant on the ball and stern on tackles. Was often the go-to threat when the Saints risked attacking ploys but didn’t have the requisite midfield support.

Victor Lindelof – 7.1

Was the man who proved to be too short to counter Vestergaard’s aerial threat in the goal. Was often left alone when Maguire drifted forward.

Harry Maguire – 7.1

Could have been more clinical at the back and more than once the Englishman caused the shape of their defense to be disrupted. Won’t be happy with the lack of yet another cleansheet.

Ashley Young – 6.9

Was much better at replacing Luke Shaw than was expected but proved unable to provide the defensive cover nor the penetrating ability after the home side went down to 10 men.

Paul Pogba – 7.1

Made plenty of mistakes including losing the ball thrice in a 30-second spell. Played significantly better when moved to the no.10 spot.

Scott McTominay – 8.0

Was United’s finest player on the pitch alongside James. Showed both defensive discipline and offensive flair. Budding creative genius.

Andreas Periera – 5.7

Was woefully poor and did little right during the game.

Juan Mata – 6.7

Much better than Lingard in the spot but couldn’t provide the dynamic interplay worthy of Solskjaer’s frontline.

Daniel James- 8.2

Clear man of the match. 3 goals in 4 games and has made a bigger impact than Alexis Sanchez did in his entire stay at United. Future no.7?

Marcus Rashford – 7.2

Very little went right for the striker. First hint of how thin Solskjaer’s striking options are?

Jesse Lingard – 6.3

Failed to redeem himself despite making multiple shots.

Nemanja Matic – 6.2

Was solid in his presence but wasted his two shots.

Mason Greenwood – Brought on too late to make a significant impact and not in the position that he’d like to function at.
