Solskjaer Explains Why Mason Greenwood Was Absent Against West Ham

Manchester United suffered a dismal 2-0 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday. The away loss adds on to the Red Devils’ terrible form on the road since last season itself and is a testament to several things that are going wrong at the outfit.

The Hammers win was engineered via goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Creswell while the away side was toothless for much of the fixture.

To add to their despair, the Mancunian giants also had to see Marcus Rashford injured during the game. Post-game reports indicated that the English forward may have suffered a groin injury and could be out for a while.

This makes United’s injury-related issues all the more worse. Many commented as to why Mason Greenwood, who on Thursday became the youngest Manchester United player to score in Europe, was absent from the away fixture.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed the reason for the teenager’s absence prior to the game to Sky Sports: “He’s not feeling well, he’s got tonsillitis. Hopefully, it won’t be too bad. He’d just had a good game Thursday night, good night, and we need him at times so hopefully he’ll be back soon.”

A player of Greenwood’s caliber was sorely missed in London as even prior to the injury, Marcus Rashford wasn’t contributing much to the attack and akin to the recent games, lacked the clinical edge in the striker’s position despite making some great runs.

Even though Rashford has electric pace, it is evident that he is now much more comfortable deploying it from a wide spot and not where he presently plies his trade.

The loss was an all-round miserable affair for Solskjaer who had to face the wrath of fans on social media.

The Norwegian gaffer’s questionable tactics, squad choice, and hesitancy to take risks with academy graduates is not going down well with United fans.
