Chris Smalling turned in brilliant Man of the Match performance for AS Roma

The summer of 2019 saw a sharp change in Manchester United’s backine with the defensive reinforcements of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and company also chose to offload Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling.

The English centre-back, who joined his former teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Rome on a season-long loan, lost his debut game as a Roma player 2-0 against Atalanta in Serie A.

However, he was named Man of the Match ahead of goalscorer Edin Dzeko, for his dominant display in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Leece.

The 29-year-old won 100% of his aerial duels and tackles, while also making more ball recoveries, shots, headed clearances, interceptions, and blocks than any other player in Stadio Via del Mare.
