Man United Make Contact With Dries Mertens Over Potential Free Transfer
Man United have an interesting task ahead of them with the January transfer window just over two weeks away.
It goes without saying that the Red Devils need to make crucial reinforcements in specific areas. Despite their youth academy graduates functioning with great brilliance in many regions, their more desperate games so far this campaign has painted a rather somber picture.
As of such, some impact deals are likely to be made in 2020. This is keeping in mind that business is unlikely to be heavy in January and some of the bigger deals could be met only in the summer.
Now, the club is linked with making an intriguing attempt for the latter window.
According to the TuttoMercatoWeb, Man United will look to acquire Napoli’s Dries Mertens in the summer. The Belgian international is all set to become a free agent at that point and the Red Devils may be one of the sides in a prime position to secure his services.
The forward has been at the heart of a dressing room controversy at Napoli, making the exit seem more likely as any hope of a renewal is bound to be an expensive one in addition to being an awkward affair.

There is also the possibility of a January pursuit, although the report in question does not mention United as a possible pursuer of that route, although Napoli could still cash in on the 32-year-old in that manner, to ensure an overhaul and fund their other transfer plans.
Although the forward hosts a specific skillset that has been widely successful over the years, his advanced age is unlikely to make him a popular name at Old Trafford.
A winter arrival would make sense to put an experienced pair of feet as alternate talent on the pitch, although the viability of that option remains vague.
