Why Carlo Ancelotti Was Shown A Red Card After The Full-Time Whistle

Everton ensured that an electric game was given to Goodison Park as they managed to end their encounter with Manchester United in a 1-1 draw.

The game saw a lot of action as David De Gea’s early error led to Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting the first goal in the third minute itself. Before the end of the second half, it was Bruno Fernandes who was clinical and Jordan Pickford who was sloppy as the Portuguese midfielder netted his third goal in as many games.

However, the real drama was reserved for the final minutes of the game. Everton were a force to be reckoned with in the second-half, with set-pieces flowing in with the bucket load.

They finally seemed to break United down in added-time when the play ensured that Harry Maguire’s deflected ball ended up in the back of the net. The home fans and the players were jubilantly celebrating the goal and all three points when protests emerged from the United squad about Richarlison.

The Everton forward was on the ground in front of David De Gea during the period of play when the goal rolled into the back of the net. The argument that seemed to have been made was that when Calvert Lewin made the strike, Richarlison was blocking the field-of-view of De Gea, thus interfering in the keeper making a save.

After consulting with the linesman and then referring to VAR, the goal was ruled out with Richarlison cited to be in an offside position despite not making any contact with the ball.

The boos rung hard at that point and when the full-time whistle was blown, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti stopped arguing with the fourth-official and stormed straight to referee Chris Kavanagh to make his displeasure with the decision known.

Unable to take more from a visibly furious Ancelotti, Kavanagh showed the gaffer the red card and sent him off, even though the full-time whistle had been blown.

The full implications of this sending off is yet to be seen with many critics claiming that the goal should have stood and that Kavanagh displayed incompetent officiating and simply wasn’t strong enough.

While Ancelotti was sent off, Everton under him is still undefeated at home in the League and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
