Accordingly, Roy Keane believes the Shanghai Shenhua star’s existence at Old Trafford has provided the Frenchman with the appropriate type of competition he required.

Following the final whistle, Keane spoke on Sky Sports: “You’ve had a reaction as well from Martial. Sometimes a new striker comes in, you praise the new striker, but then that pushes the other lads.

“There’s almost been a reaction from Martial, thinking: ‘Oh, I’ve got another player to fight with for my position’. And there’s been a good reaction.”

Being on a loan from the Chinese club however, the Nigeria international’s current contract at United is set to expire by the end of this season. But if the 30-year-old continues to showcase his experience and talent it wouldn’t surprise many if Solskjaer decides to sign him on a permanent basis.
