Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed that Mesut Ozil is holding off on signing a contract extension at Arsenal, with Barcelona keen to sign the 27-year-old.
The German World Cup winner is currently under contract at Arsenal until 2018, but it is being said that he has made it clear to the Gunners that he doesn’t want to commit long-term.
The German play-maker, who struggled in his first two seasons in North London, has been in fantastic form this season, with 4 goals and 16 assists to his name already.
Barcelona are aware of Ozil’s desire and have approached the player’s representatives, as written by the Spanish outlet. The report explains that a firm enquiry may follow once club officials have assessed how exactly Ozil would fit into a team that already boasts many of the world’s very best players in midfield.
German daily Bild also claim that ‘a representative’ of the 27-year-old has told them of interest from other clubs.
“It is well known and true that Arsenal want to extend with Mesut,” Bild claim they were told.
“It is also true that there are constantly other requests for him. Mesut is a world champion, the most creative player in Europe, Germany’s top player – so it is clear that top clubs show their interest in him.”
Arsenal remain confident that Mesut Ozil will stay at the club past this season and sign a new contract, despite stories linking him with a move to Barcelona.
