Mourinho To Manchester United A Done Deal, Claims Liverpool Legend
Jose Mourinho to Manchester United is a done deal, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has claimed.
Jose Mourinho, who has publicly stated that he will be returning to management next season, has been heavily linked with Manchester United ever since he got sacked by Chelsea 5 months ago. But with United CEO Ed Woodward wanting Louis van Gaal to see out his 3-year contract, the managerial future of Manchester United is still very much unclear.
However, last week, the ‘Special One’ did open up a bit on the topic of Manchester United whilst in Mexico, as the Portuguese tactician was in charge of the FIFA legends team featuring the likes of Ronaldinho and Figo, amongst other legends. The 53-year-old was asked about United’s loss to West Ham, and if that loss would affect his future, to which he merely smiled enigmatically and replied: “There is plenty of time.”
Mourinho clearly doesn’t want to rule out a move to the Theatre of Dreams just yet, but whether it does happen this summer will largely depend on where Van Gaal’s Red Devils finish in the league this season, according to Liverpool legend Phil Thompson.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said: “If you’re asking my honest opinion, then I think the deal is already done.
“There’s been a lot in the papers and United have a very close relationship with Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s super agent. There’s also been the talk that they’re still harbouring the idea of bringing back Cristiano Ronaldo, who also has Mendes as his agent, so Mourinho coming in could sway that.
“If Van Gaal did win the FA Cup and finish in the top four, then my option is that he should get the other year, but I think it would be extremely difficult for United to go back on an agreement because Mourinho isn’t the sort of guy that waits around.”
