Barcelona Win The La Liga Title With One Point
FC Barcelona have been crowned the Champions of Spain for the 24th time after their 3-0 away victory over Granada on the final day of the 2015-16 La Liga season.
It was a tense start to the game for the Catalan giants, especially due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s early goal against Deportivo La Coruna which took Real Madrid 2 points ahead of Barcelona, and would’ve eventually crowned them champions had things stayed the same. But Luis Suarez came to Barcelona’s rescue, scoring a title-winning hat-trick by scoring goals in the 22nd, 38th and 86th minutes of the game.
This was the Uruguayan’s third hat-trick in four matches, taking his total La Liga goal tally to 40 goals and helping him beat Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Trofeo Pichichi – La Liga’s golden boot award.
Barcelona were unbeaten in 39 games and nine points clear at the top of the table before the second El Clasico of the season took place on 2nd April. However, following the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid at the Nou Camp, the Catalans slumped into a dramatic fall, and within 15 days, they were not only knocked out of the Champions League, but were also on top of La Liga only due to the head-to-head differences, their nine point lead completely vanished.
But Luis Enrique’s men recovered and responded by winning five league games in a row, scoring 24 goals and conceding none at all, retaining the La Liga trophy in some style.
Enrique had his say on the bad spell as well as the title win by stating: “It was a deserved title which shows that the team knows how to bounce back from a bad spell. The hard work of the team throughout the season must be praised.”
Star of the day Luis Suarez also expressed his thoughts on the win: “I score goals thanks to hard work and the help of my teammates; they give me the chances and I just put them away. (The Pichichi) would not have meant anything if we had not won the league.”
Club legend and Captain Andres Iniesta was also quoted as saying: “La Liga is glorious. It is the competition of stability, the one we are able to win year after year. It is a title which the most consistent team wins, and this year it was us. Winning six leagues out of eight says a lot about the team’s current cycle.
“Whenever you win the league, it is a great season. Then you have other prizes, like the cup and the Champions League, and now we will fight to win the second title next week.”
Barcelona now have the chance to win a second successive league and cup double if they beat Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final on Sunday, 22nd May.
