Fulham Missed Their Chance To Sign Euro 2016 Top Scorer
Possibly the worst choice in English football took place back in 2014, when Fulham enquired about the availability of French star, Antoine Griezmann.
Griezmann is currently the top scorer of the Euro 2016 and has fired his nation to the final of the competition. Antoine has scored a total of 6 goals leading to the final, and is the favorite to win the Euro 2016 Golden boot.
Fulham F.C. were detoured when they were told that Antione would cost them £12 million. The English club, under the management of Rene Meulensteen, had denied the opportunity to sign the then 23-year-old Frenchman from Real Sociedad – who is currently the most popular man in France.
As if it wasn’t bad enough that they rejected Antoine Griezmann, Rene Meulensteen instead pushed for the club to spend £12 million on Kostas Mitroglou from Olympiacos (a Fulham club transfer record) – a move that didn’t prove to be as successful as hoped.
Kostas Mitroglou went on to make 3 appearances for the club before being loaned out for the next two consecutive seasons, and finally being sold to Benfica in 2016.
The English club has since been relegated from the Barclays Premier League, and finished 20th in last season’s Championship. Griezmann must be happy that the move never materialized.
Meanwhile, Antoine Griezmann moved to Atletico Madrid in the same year, for a transfer fee of €30 million, and has seen his career take off since..
Antoine’s goal tally (6) in this year’s Euro 2016 puts him 3 goals ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo – a man who Griezmann will be meeting in the Final of the competition.
France will play Portugal in the final after eliminating Germany and Wales in their respective semi-finals. The final is to be played on the 10th of July 2016, with the hosts being the favorites to take the trophy.
