Mourinho Asks 9 Players, Including Schweinsteiger, To Leave

With a new manager at the helm, changes to the squad are expected, and that is precisely what’s happening at Manchester United under their new manger José Mourinho. According to the Daily Mail, up to 9 players at Manchester United have been asked to leave the club.

After playing a couple of pre-season friendlies, Mourinho has a good idea about his squad. Based on that, he has decided to axe nine players. All nine of them trained with the U21s rather the first team on Thursday.

Youngsters like Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Andreas Periera, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett, who rose to fame under the previous Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal, are on the list along with Will Keane, James Wilson, Adnan Januzaj and German national team captain, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

José Mourinho, who in his very first press conference announced that he intends to continue the tradition of developing youngsters, has seemingly gone back on his words, as the 8 aforementioned youngsters were asked to train with the U21s instead of the first team.

It is unlikely any of the nine will be involved in United’s friendly against Galatasaray in Gothenburg on Saturday. Pereira and Wilson have been told that they may have a future in the club, and that they will be loaned out this season.

The shocking inclusion to this list is the Bastian Schweinsteiger. The former Bayern Munich midfielder signed for Manchester United last summer for a fee reported to be around £7m. But the German had an injury tormented season, and as a result, couldn’t live up to expectations. With the possible arrival of Paul Pogba, it is said that the 31-year-old will be axed from the team to clear up space and wages.

Adnan Januzaj is the next most notable exclusion. After enjoying a stellar break through season under current Sunderland manager David Moyes, the Belgian international hasn’t lived up to the hype either.

Does the exclusion of these players mean that fresh players will be signed, or is this just Mourinho trimming down the squad to a preferred size?
