Bastian Schweinsteiger, who joined Manchester United from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2015, recently relieved himself of national team duties, announcing his retirement from the German national team on social media.

The 32-year-old had a difficult first season at Manchester United under Louis Van Gaal, as injuries kept him away from action for a majority of the season, and him not being able to perform as per expectations in the remaining games hasn’t helped his case either.

And now, with Jose Mourinho wanting fresh players in midfield, and with the possible arrival of Frenchman Paul Pogba on a world record transfer, the competition in midfield has increased a lot, and the German looks to be the player that will be left out.

United might be forced to subsidize any financial package if they are desperate to release Bastian, with AC Milan and Inter credited with interest.

Schweinsteiger’s former club Bayern Munich’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has offered his opinion on the story.

He said: ‘I am 100 per cent convinced that Schweinsteiger will not return to Germany. I can see him staying at Manchester United and try to achieve their goals under a new coach.

‘Maybe he could surprise Mourinho. Either way, Bastian has had an amazing career. Nothing can change that.’

Tobi Schweinsteiger, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s brother, made his feelings clear on Twitter. Tobi is highly active on social media, supporting his brother and his favourite team Manchester United.

Tobi tweeted ‘No respect’ which seems to be a message for Mourinho, who has sidelined his brother.
