Mourinho Says Memphis Will Deliver

Memphis Depay signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2015, amidst a lot of fanfare. The Dutch winger had arrived after being the top scorer and the best player in the Eredivisie.

However, Depay endured an extremely underwhelming first season with the Red Devils, where he only scored 7 goals in 45 appearances – a stark contrast from the 28 goals he scored in 40 appearances in his last season at PSV Eindhoven.

Depay’s lifestyle was in the news more than his game, as his flashy manner of living was blamed for his misfortunes on the pitch.

He was expected to be one of the first casualties of Mourinho’s squad upheaval, but the Portuguese manager has shown faith in him. Mourinho recently named Depay in his 23-man squad for the Premier League.

The Special One also spoke highly about Memphis and his future at Manchester United in a recent interview.

He said: “Memphis is frustrated with what happened last season, where he lost all confidence. But he will be back.”

Mourinho further talked about how he has been observing the Netherlands international for some time.

“Of course, I want Memphis to be part of my squad,” Jose stated. “I know the player I’ve watched at PSV and the World Cup when he was a young kid. Having that player in mind, I want to keep him. And I believe in him, yes. Especially as I see a good boy, a good kid, a good professional.”

Mourinho also revealed that the youngster’s lifestyle has nothing to do with his form on the pitch.

“You can see him driving a nice car and you think this guy is not thinking about football, but that is not the case. He is frustrated with what happened last season, where he lost all confidence. But he will be back.”
