Real Rejected The Chance To Sign Lewandowski, Claims Balague

Real Madrid turned down the chance to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, according to popular journalist Guillem Balague.

Lewandowski’s desire to move to the Bernabeu has been well known for some time now, but the club are not as keen.

It was reported that Lewandowski’s representatives had held talks with Madrid over a potential transfer earlier in the summer, but negotiations broke down, and the Poland International is set to remain at Bayern.

Lewandowski enjoyed a jaw-dropping season for the Bundesliga giants – his personal best till date – scoring 42 goals in 51 appearances. He also played a major role in helping Bayern win the league and cup double, becoming one of the hottest properties in Europe in the process.

Real were reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, but have come to see Benzema as a better option up front, and do not want to upset their star striker. Benzema made 27 appearances in La Liga last season, scoring 24 goals.

As a result of Lewandowski’s failure to convince Real to sign him, he will now sign a new contract with Bayern which will see him stay at the club till 2021, according to Guillem Balague.

Balague tweeted: “On Lewandowski: Tried hard to go to R Madrid (a dream of his) but club didn’t, not to upset Benzema. New contract soon for RL till 2021.”

Lewandowski controversially signed for Bayern on a free transfer in 2014, after his contract with the Barvarian club’s fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund expired. However, the striker is reportedly unsettled in Germany, and would be open to a switch to the Premier League.

Manchester United and Chelsea were known suitors, but with both having signed strikers this summer – United signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea signed Michy Batshuayi – a deal now looks unlikely.

Arsenal, as ever, remain interested, but the price tag for the Pole might be a put off for Wenger.

Bayern chief Karl-Heinze Rummenigge refused to entertain rumours linking Lewandowski with a move away from the club.

He said: “One thing I know for sure. Lewandowski will play at Bayern Munich in the next season. No one must make thoughts about that.

“The decision is like this: We will not give Robert Lewandowski to another club, no matter what they will offer us. We have no breaking point for Robert.”
