The United winger scored the opener with a sensational solo run from near the half-way line in United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Community Shield. However, he suffered a foot injury a few minutes later, and was substituted in the second half.
He has not played a game since, with Mourinho claiming the youngster hadn’t fully recovered from the injury in time for the club’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, and the game against Southampton last Friday.
The 23-year-old has returned to training however, posting a picture on his Twitter page, captioned: ‘Good to be back training with the lads after my injury #manchesterunited #firstneverfollows‘
Despite this, reports say that Lingard has not been included in United’s match-day squad for their upcoming fixture against Hull City.
The youngster looked set to be United’s first choice when the season started, which is why the injury will come as a massive blow. He was replaced by Juan Mata for the next two games, and faces stiff competition from the Spaniard and new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan for a place in the squad.
The injury brings back memories of Lingard’s debut for United, where he started the first Premier League game of the Louis van Gaal era, but suffered an injury few minutes into the match and consequently missed the rest of the season.
