Two Premier League Clubs Wanted Rakitic
The transfer window ended barely a day ago, and we’re already hearing rumours of deals which didn’t go through.
According to Spain based media outlet Mundo Deportivo, English giants Manchester United and Chelsea both wanted to sign Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic.
Rumours of him being ready to leave Barcelona began in the month of July. This occurred after Barcelona confirmed the signing of Euro 2016 winner Andre Gomes. The Portuguese midfielder was signed from fellow La Liga club Valencia for a fee estimated to be in the range of €50-60m.
The rumours surrounding Rakitic’s future began after his agent began behaving strangely on Twitter.
The agent, Miquel Sors wrote “I think it’s time to go…” on Twitter.
The Croatian midfielder isn’t Miquel Sors’ only client, but it was the timing of his tweet which set tongues wagging on social media.
To complicate things, Sors even retweeted a tweet which implied that with the arrival of Andre Gomes, any midfielder including Rakitic can leave.
However, Rakitic has ended up deciding to stay at the Catalan club.
According to Mundo Deportivo, English clubs Manchester United and Chelsea were both interested in acquiring the services of the 28-year-old Croatian international.
Furthermore, even Serie A champions Juventus tried getting Rakitic to sign for them.
Rakitic, despite knowing about the proposals from various top clubs, decided to reject them and stay at Barcelona. Mundo Deportivo have claimed that the bids for Rakitic were of significant amounts, and yet, were rejected.
