Spanish Sports Magazine Don Balon reports that Jose Mourinho has offered James Rodriguez a ‘major role’ in the Manchester United squad.
Manchester United have been linked with the 25-year-old throughout the summer transfer window, but a move never materialized as United were occupied in their pursuit of Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils were also believed to have been interested in James before the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but Real Madrid got the final say, after they signed the Colombian due to his incredible performances in Brazil.
However, Rodriguez failed to replicate his mind-blowing World Cup form for Real Madrid, and as a result, he has fallen down the pecking order in the Real Madrid squad.

The Colombian International plays in an attacking midfield role, but can also be deployed on the wings, and possibly as a striker.
Zidane has plenty of options for the Colombian’s position, meaning that if James would like first-team football, his best chance would be to leave Madrid next summer.
Sports Illustrated report that Inter Milan had offered the midfielder a contract, but he rejected the move as he insists he is willing to stay in Madrid and fight for his place. Inter reportedly offered Real €85 million for James, an amount similar to what Manchester United were preparing to offer.

Manchester United spent close to £150 million this summer, bringing four big names to Old Trafford. They will most probably have to wait until the next summer if they are to continue their pursuit of Rodriguez.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were both handed transfer bans last month, and as a result, both clubs cannot sign anyone who will be able to play for them next year.
This could make the exit of James Rodriguez less likely, despite Real Madrid’s midfield being already saturated with World Class players.
