Manchester United are believed to be keeping tabs on Rodrigo Caio, a defensive player currently playing for Sao Paulo.

The Daily Star report the Manchester United have entered the race to sign Caio, but they will have to fight off competition from Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Sevilla.

Caio, a member of the Brazilian football team that won gold in Rio Olympics this summer, is able to play as a centre-back and also as a defensive midfielder, similar to Dutchman Daley Blind.

The 23-year-old has made 185 first team appearances for Sao Paulo, and it seems a move to the Premier League awaits him next summer.

Manchester United’s £12 million offer may be enough to scare away others clubs, but Mourinho can’t be certain of the player’s quality in the Premier League.

Reports from Spain claim that the player failed a medical with Valencia last summer, and as a result, had to remain in Brazil.

But having played nearly 200 games for Sao Paulo, fitness shouldn’t be a big issue for him if Manchester United were to come calling.

Caio’s versatility seems to be Mourinho’s main interest, especially with Manchester United already struggling defensively this season. Caio could be a long-term replacement for United’s Michael Carrick, who seems to be playing his last season with Manchester United.

Fellaini, Pogba, Herrera, and Carrick, have all been deployed in defensive midfield by Mourinho this season, but the manager is yet to find a consistent performer.

Paul Pogba, United’s record summer signing, seems to be slowly adapting to the role, but it’s clear that he isn’t allowed as much freedom as he is usually used to having.

Ander Herrera has looked to form a lasting relationship with Pogba in defensive midfield, but the arrival of Ciao could allow Herrera or Pogba to be pushed further upfield to help United be more potent with their attacking play.
