Depay Set For Bundesliga Move
Memphis Depay could be set for a switch to the Bundesliga in January.
According to reports in German newspaper Bild, the Dutch winger has attracted interest from Wolfsburg, and might decide to call time on his short Old Trafford career in favour of a switch to the Volkswagen Arena.
Depay signed for Manchester United last summer from PSV Eindhoven. The youngster had an incredible final season with PSV in his homeland, where he scored a stunning 25 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions. His goals helped his side to the Eredivisie title, and he deservedly earned a mention as one of Europe’s best young players.
On making the move to the Theatre of Dreams, Depay stated that he was determined to become one of the best players in the world at the club. However, things have not gone as rosy as planned for the 22-year-old, who has struggled to adapt to the English game. Despite a bright start to his United career, the Dutchman failed to find any sort of consistency to his game, and he failed to live up to expectations in his first season.
He eventually lost his place in Louis van Gaal’s side, and his woes were compounded by the former United manager’s decision to entirely leave him out of the squad for the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, which the Red Devils went on to win.
Van Gaal was sacked in the summer and Depay regularly posted videos of himself working hard in the gym in an attempt to convince the incoming manager that he was ready to fight for his place in the side, and put a disappointing first year behind him.
However, things have only gotten worse for the Netherlands international. Jose Mourinho’s arrival has seen Depay play only 12 Premier League minutes this season, and he has had to watch himself fall below the likes of Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Martial in the pecking order.
Wolfsburg are reportedly ready to bring an end to Depay’s woeful United career, and will offer the star a route out of the Old Trafford club in January.
