Jose Mourinho has claimed that Paul Pogba would be a ‘phenomenal’ centre-back – a statement that has not gone down too well with the Manchester United fans on Twitter.

Pogba became the world’s most expensive football player of all time, after signing for Manchester United from Juventus for a reported fee of £100 million.

However, the Frenchman has struggled to show the United faithful why their club paid so much money to bring him back to Old Trafford. He has looked out of sorts, and has especially struggled to figure out which position he is best suited to playing.

However, Mourinho has defended the 23-year-old, saying that the problem isn’t about where he plays, but about how he adapts to a new style of football. In same interview, though, Mourinho went on to say that Pogba has all the skills to make it as a top class central defender!

“He can play in so many positions,” Mourinho said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports’ Andy Burton, ahead of United’s EFL Cup fourth-round tie with Manchester City on Wednesday.

“I think it is really difficult to play or adapt from different realities, but he is a phenomenal player. He has unbelievable potential.

“He is a very self-confident boy too, so we are living well with the critics, if you want, and we know what the critics are.

“He’s a top player and I think he could be a phenomenal central defender. With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender, too.”

Popular social media website Twitter has not been very forgiving when they hear something they don’t like, and it needn’t be said that Mourinho’s words didn’t exactly go down well with some United fans.
