Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins is set to stay at the club, despite interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Gelson Martins is considered as the next big thing in Portuguese football, dubbed to follow the footsteps of Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo. With his impressive performance for Sporting, the player is rumoured to be linked with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

But despite all these rumours, his agent Ulisses Santos is ruling out any possibility of a move away from Sporting, by further adding that his the player will not only be staying at the club, but may even sign a new contract.

“There is no proposal. He is a Sporting player and will continue to be in January,” Santos said in quotes reported by A Bola. “With all certainty he will not leave. He has a long contract and will not leave.”

Martins currently has a contract with Sporting until 2021, with a release clause of €60 million.

A Bola reported last month that the youngster is a target for Manchester United, Chelsea, as well as Arsenal. These English giants have even sent their scouts several times to watch this talented player in action last month, as per reports. At the same time, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and German titans Bayern Munich are also monitoring the player’s situation.

The 21-year-old winger scored six goals and provided four assists in 40 appearances made in all competitions for Sporting. The club are now planning to offer a new deal to their promising starlet, which will have a release clause worth €80 million.

“We are in talks and we will see what will happen. The environment is good and we will, I’m sure, reach a good understanding,” said Gelson’s agent.
