Manchester United are edging closer to secure the deal for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij, according to reports.

De Vrij has been heavily linked with a move to the Old Trafford, dating back to Louis van Gaal’s time in charge.

Chelsea, Manchester City and AC Milan are all also interested in the defender, while the Blues are said to be strong contenders in the bidding war for de Vrij.

The Dutchman has been in great fine form this term – guiding Lazio to sit tight in the fifth position in the Serie A.

And as per Italian website Il Messaggero, United boss Jose Mourinho is leading the race to sign the highly-rated defender, as the Portuguese is looking to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

His top priority is to land a defender, with Chris Smalling still injured and Eric Bailly off to the African Cup of Nations in January.

Although Southampton captain Jose Fonte was previously identified as Mourinho’s top target, the Old Trafford hierarchy would now be much happier to hear that Lazio are ready to let go De Vrij at the end of the season.

It is believed that the defender has already rejected three contract offers in a bid to cutting all ties with the Serie A club.

The 24-year-old has impressed Mourinho enough for the United boss to be willing to spend £30 million to secure his signature.
