It seems Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his defensive options this month, despite some reports hinting he will not sign any defender in January.

According to The Sun, United are ready to return for Roma star Kostas Manolas, and are willing to break the bank with an unbelievable £47.6m bid for the Greek international.

Since making a switch to Roma from Olympiakos back in 2014, the 25-year-old defender has seen vast improvement, and also has become one of the top defenders in Europe, forming an integral part of Italian club’s drive for silverware.

However, if the latest report is to be believed, this mouth-watering offer will surely test the Giallorossi’s resolve, although the report further states they will try to stick for £52m and push United to increase the abiding amount.

Yes, it will be an expensive transfer for United, but if Mourinho has already decided that Manolas can solve his defensive headache, then maybe it’s a sensible move considering the resources at the club will make it financially viable.

With Eric Bailly away on international duty this January at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Rojo’s latest injury in the FA Cup win over Reading, the Portuguese manager now has Chris Smalling and Phil Jones who can step in.

But, it seems as though he is keen for a long-term partner for Bailly, and as he continues to strengthen the spine of his squad, only time will tell if United can make a breakthrough to take the Greek defender to Old Trafford before the end of the month.
