Gerrard Claims He Knows Why Griezmann Rejected Man United

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has claimed that he knows the reason behind Antoine Griezmann snubbing Manchester United this January.

The Atletico Madrid star has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital for quite a while now, with Manchester United remaining the frontrunners in the race for his signature the entire time.

United are believed to be willing to do whatever it takes to sign the 25-year-old – be it flexing their financial muscle, or taking advantage of the France international’s close friendship with their current record signing, Paul Pogba.

United are definitely in for Griezmann, but while some sources stated Jose Mourinho had identified the Frenchman as his primary summer transfer target, others insisted that the Red Devils were actually looking to get the deal done during the Winter transfer window itself.

Steven Gerrard, now a BT Sport pundit, is one to believe the latter reports, and the legendary midfielder has now claimed that he knows precisely why Griezmann refused a move to Manchester in January.

The Liverpool legend stated: “He’s playing in the Champions League for Atletico Madrid. He’s got a chance of competing for that, which they have done for the past couple of years. And he’s probably thinking: ‘Yeah, Manchester United probably is a good move, but it’s still going to be there in the summer.'”

Gerrard’s assumption regarding the supposed rejection may very well be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that Manchester United remain the favourites to sign Griezmann come summer.

However, it’s still too soon to assume this transfer saga as a done deal, as things may change drastically if Mourinho’s men, who still sit 6th in the Premier League table, fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
