Manchester United face stiff competition to sign the Atletico Madrid defender who is now at the top of the wishlist at Anfield.

The Red Devils are desperate for some defensive additions in the summer transfer window as Mourinho has not been able to settle into a backline this season. This has seen him linked with a number of star players recently and one player that is now on the radar is Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

The 22-year old is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in Europe at the moment but he has fallen out of favor under Diego Simeone at the Vicente Calderon this season.

Gimenez will enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season and with the Spanish club not ready to offer him a new deal, he is expected to be up for a move to the Premier League.

He reportedly has a release clause of £38m but his potential suitors can land him at a cut price as Atletico will not want him to leave on a free at the end of the next season. And Manchester United are not the only club who are scouting for his services this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who also have a fair number of problems with their defense are also looking for a center back to partner Joel Matip at the back and the manager has identified the Uruguayan as the perfect addition to his squad.

It is understood that both teams have already met with the player’s representative and have spoken about their desire to land the player this summer.

Gimenez has made just 19 appearances this season, spending most of the season on the bench. He has been hit by a couple of injuries this season but at just 22, he is a superb option for the biggest clubs in England.
