Mourinho May Be Manchester United’s Next Centre-Back

Manchester United’s injury woes continue to snowball, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah being the latest addition to the casualty list. The defender is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a suspected dislocated shoulder injury.

With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Marcos Rojo out for considerable amount of time, Fosu-Mensah’s injury would have surely given Mourinho a headache.

Mourinho had described the Dutch footballer’s injury as “significant,” which now leaves him without eight senior players for the visit of Swansea City to Old Trafford on Sunday.

However, Mourinho seems to have found the comic side during this crestfallen situation. Eric Bailly is the only recognised fit centre-half left at the Portuguese’s disposal, and hence, will have to play all the time because of the club’s defensive crisis.

Moreover, with Daley Blind operating as a makeshift central defender, Mourinho has now joked that he may have to play as a centre-back against Swansea.

Mourinho stated: “In this moment he [Bailly] is the only option we have. It’s Axel, Eric and Daley. I think Eric and Daley they played again absolutely amazingly. I have to speak with them and see how they are, see how they feel.

“I’m also training hard in the gym so I can also be an option. Mourinho and Tuanzebe against Swansea.”

Manchester United still have a lot to play for, as race to the Top 4 is nowhere near finished. Also, with Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo around the corner, the Red Devils will definitely have to bring out their A game. But with the declining availability of players, the job will be much more strenuous than one would imagine.
