Yaya Toure has revealed that he tried convincing Paul Pogba to join Manchester City before hE signed up for their cross-town rivals.

The France international, who left Manchester United on a free transfer 4 years ago, returned last summer from Serie A leaders Juventus in a record-breaking £89 million deal.

Two years ago, Txiki Begiristain, sporting director of City, also enquired about the dynamic midfielder, but the deal didn’t come through.

And now, Yaya Toure has admitted that he too tried persuading the Euro 2016 finalist to join Manchester City.

“He (Pogba) is a good lad,” the 33-year-old said. “He’s clever and I’m a bit disappointed because I spoke with him in the past and I wanted him to come to City but it didn’t happen.”

Toure, who is yet to be offered a new contract by Pep Guardiola, has urged his side to secure a top three finish in the Premier League.

He added: “Liverpool losing last weekend was a good result for us, but we must be careful as there is still a lot of hard work to be done. We have to win as many games as we can, focus on what we need to do and try to make sure we get the job done as there are a lot of strange results this time of the season.

“We want to make sure we end up in the top three and qualify for the Champions League. It will be difficult and it’s going to be very tight at the top, but it’s in our own hands and we are determined to do it.”
