Manchester United are planning to sign a top class central defender this summer, and Jose Mourinho is to choose between the likes of Michael Keane, Victor Lindelof, and Virgil van Dijk.

The Red Devils managed to step into the group stages of next season’s Champions League after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ajax on Wednesday.

The manager used the Chris Smalling and Daley Blind as the center-backs on the night, who got the job done, but it is hard to see Mourinho stick with them next season.

Recent buy Eric Bailly has been in decent form, and is expected to be the first choice next season, but Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have failed to impress Mourinho, who is now desperate for another central defender this summer.

Latest reports from Sky Sports have revealed that van Dijk, Lindelof, and Keane are on the Portuguese’s shortlist to partner Bailly next season. These three names are a part of the list that Mourinho has given the United hierarchy to fulfil before the start of next season.

Lindelof has been extensively linked with a move to Old Trafford since the start of the year, and Mourinho is a big fan of the player, and might end up spending more than £40m on his services this summer.

But he will also look at two players with previous Premier League experience, in Van Dijk and Keane.

Burnley star Keane was kicked out of Old Trafford just a couple of years ago by Louis van Gaal, but he has turned into a superstar at the Turf Moor, and has earned his first English cap this campaign. He is as good an option as any, but Van Dijk is not bad either.

The Dutch international is fast turning into one of the best in the league, and is wanted by every top club in the country. He could cost £50m, while Keane could cost around £30m.

The report claims that United are sure to sign at least one of these three names this summer.
