Manchester United may have failed in their quest to sign Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

According to French football news outlet Telefoot, Jose Mourinho had earmarked the Brazilian defender as his top priority signing this summer. United were set to offer the Ligue 1 runners up a mammoth €60 million to secure the services of the centre-back, who was also linked with Barcelona and Juventus.

Prior to the new contract, Marquinhos had been linked with a move away from the club for quite a while. The former AS Roma defender was said to be keen on a new challenge, as he struggled to get into the PSG team ahead of David Luiz and Thiago Silva.

However, the 23-year-old clocked up an impressive 44 appearances for the French giants last season, and the fact that he has finally managed to become a key component of Unai Emery’s team appears to have made him reevaluate his options and decide against moving.

His contract with the Paris-based club was set to expire at the end of the upcoming season, but he has opted to sign a new deal now, and will remain at the club till at least 2022.
