Antoine Griezmann has revealed that he didn’t bother calling up Jose Mourinho to say that he would be staying at Atletico Madrid.
The striker was all set to join Manchester United this summer, and he admitted on several occasions that a move was more than possible.
However, after Atletico Madrid were banned from signing new players by FIFA for breaching regulations related to the signing of underage players, the striker decided to remain at the club for another campaign.
Les Rojiblancos were lining up replacements for the striker in the form of Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Sevilla’s Vitolo, while an agreement was in place to sign Alexandre Lacazette – who has now signed for Arsenal instead.
Following news reports that he had signed a new contract at Atletico Madrid, many papers spread rumors that Griezmann had called up Mourinho and informed him that he would be staying with the La Liga side. However, the Frenchman has denied these reports, referring to them as ‘made up’ and ‘false’
“No, no, no. No, that’s totally made up. False. It was my decision. I communicated it to the club. That’s it,” he told FourFourTwo.
“I have stayed mainly because of the transfer ban. Atletico needed me now more than ever and I felt I had to stay. It would be dirty to leave. I wouldn’t have been myself, or the person that I feel I am today, if I had left this club in that way.
“I spoke to Diego Simeone about the situation, our options and how he wanted me to stay to work out what we could do. Then we finalised everything with [chief executive] Miguel Angel Gil. I have too much respect for this club and the people in it to leave now because, just like Real Sociedad, they’ve given me everything.
“To be honest, I don’t know. I’m going to be playing for Atletico next season and after that we’ll see. All I am thinking about now is Atletico Madrid. I think it’s absurd to talk about something that is more than a year away.”
