Among pre-season friendlies and transfer rumours at their peak, a tragedy took the news and media by storm, as Ajax confirmed that Abdelhak Nouri recently suffered permanent and serious brain damage.

The horrific incident took place when Ajax played against Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly last week, which was interrupted by the youngster suffering a cardiac arrhythmia during the second half. As the player was rushed to the hospital and put in an induced coma to aid his medical process, the friendly was eventually abandoned.

Initial reports from the club suggested that things were getting better with the lad and his heart, thankfully, having no major damages. However, upon gaining consciousness, a few tests were conducted, and a serious and permanent damage to his brain was pointed out, which was caused when the brain was starved of oxygen after the collapsed.

The club got the message out in the open, as they sent out positive prayers and heartfelt good wishes to the player through their official Twitter account. The hashtag ‘#StayStrongAppie’ united many players to tweet about the talented youngster, and provide the strength he needs to come back to being his healthy self.

The 20-year-old midfielder was at the beginning of his career, and had only made his senior debut for the Dutch side last season. He had since appeared 15 times for Ajax, and was taking that momentum forward into having a good upcoming campaign.

Injuries and tragic incidents are the sad side of every sport, and we all pray and wish Abdelhak a super speedy recovery, and we hope to see him out back on the pitch one day.
