Manchester United are keen to tie down Ander Herrera with a new long-term deal, in order to fend off interest from Spanish giants Barcelona.

According to The Telegraph, the Premier League outfit held talks with Herrera’s representatives in the United States during their summer tour, as they move closer to keeping hold of their star midfielder for as long as possible.

Reports also claim that Herrera’s agent, Arturo Canales, was in America during the final week of the side’s 18-day tour of the country ,and met with United’s hierarchy to discuss an extension to the player’s existing contract.

The 27-year-old has 12 months left on his current contract, which he signed in June 2014 following his £28.8 million move from Athletic Bilbao. The deal also has an option of extension for a further year.

The fan-favourite midfielder is happy in Manchester, and enjoyed a terrific season under manager Jose Mourinho last term, that saw him being adjudged the club’s player of the year. The Spanish international helped United win 3 trophies last season, and is considered to be a potential club captain for the future.

Herrera’s exploits saw an increased speculation of an interest from new Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde, but United are not in a mood to let a key player leave. The Spaniard has spent 3 seasons with the club, and is touted to spend many more years and enjoy a solid partnership with Paul Pogba in the centre of the pitch.

Jose has immense trust in the player, as he looks to complete a positive deal with Herrera before the new season starts on August 8 with the UEFA Super Cup clash against Real Madrid.
