Manchester United have stepped up their efforts in their pursuit of Barcelona star Sergi Roberto’s signature, and are expected to trigger his £36.5 million buy-out clause, reports Don Balon. Jose Mourinho’s search for a perfect midfield trio has led him to Barcelona, where he hopes to land a deal for the player.

The talented midfielder covered as a right-back for the Catalans for a good majority of the season following the departure of Dani Alves. However, he still managed to produce decent performances somewhat consistently, and provided a goal and 6 assists last time around.

Meanwhile, the player himself is reportedly unhappy about the arrival of former Tottenham man Paulinho, meaning the La Masia graduate will end up falling below the pecking order. Moreover, being played out of position has also raised his frustration.

However, a move to Manchester could change that, as the Mancunians have lined up a deal that would trigger Roberto’s release clause. The Premier League giants have decided to pay the Barca man’s buy-out clause of £36.5 million in order to bring him over to Old Trafford.

Adding to the advantage of Mourinho’s side, Don Balon also reported that Sergi was upset after being left out of the starting lineup that faced Clasico rivals Real Madrid last night in the Spanish Super Cup first-leg, where the Blaugrana lost 3-1.

Having already spent £145 million this summer on Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic, and Victor Lindelof, this is again a bold move from the English giants. However, the United boss is still adamant on strengthening his squad, and thus, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sergi is soon seen in United colours.
