Only last summer, Paul Pogba became the world’s most expensive player after an £89 million move to Manchester United. At the time, the fee seemed ludicrously high. Just 12 months on and the definition of ludicrous seems to have had several revisions to it, because if these rumours prove to be true, the Frenchman could now be fourth on the list of the most expensive players in the world.

Manchester United have reportedly launched a massive £92 million bid to secure the signature of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid, according to a number of reports in Spain.

Bale has been a target for Jose Mourinho for most of this summer, with the United manager being desperate to add a new world-class winger to his star studded squad.

The Red Devils have spent a lot of the summer chasing after Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, but would obviously prefer a move for Bale if the chance to sign him arose.

According to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, Real have grown frustrated with Bale in recent times, with the forward constantly suffering niggling injuries that have hindered him from reaching his full potential with the La Liga and Champions League winners.

As a result, recouping the £86 million they had splashed on Bale to sign him from Tottenham four years ago, plus an extra £6 million, could prove to be too good a bid to turn down.

On a personal note, Bale will also be eager to get back to playing regular first-team football and being a crucial member of a team once more. The emergence of Marco Asensio has seen the Welshman have his place in the squad under some serious threat, while it is also known that Zinedine Zidane is a firm admirer of Isco.

As unlikely as this deal may seem, this summer has seen some previously unfathomable deals go through, and has easily been one of the craziest transfer windows yet. If Mourinho does get his man, then United fans will no doubt believe that this will be their year.
